As we continue to focus deeper on our analysis between HIPC and OECD countries we have found two additional datasets through the World Bank’s DataBank. These two datasets augment our originial world development indicators by providing a deeper looking into two areas of interest:

  1. Health and Population Statistics - https://databank.worldbank.org/source/health-nutrition-and-population-statistics
  2. Education Statistics - https://databank.worldbank.org/source/education-statistics-%5e-all-indicators

In our last blog post we began our modeling with covariates with population statistics like accesss to electricy and primary school enrollment. However, these covariates are only the beginning of a larger analysis that we can do with the help of these two new datasets. This deeper analysis will help us understand the impact of individual situations on the larger economic conditions of the coutry. We expect to find that as the individual situation improves so will the economic conditions.

These new dataset will help us to understand the differences in health conditions between HIPC and OECD countries. It provides features like “number of deaths under 5”, “people using safe drinking water”, “contraceptive prevelance”, and more that will allow us to observe important relationship between the health of the individual and the health of the economy. While our modeling will certainly not reach the sophistication of the practitioners in this field we see this as a good intorduction to using statistics as a public policy tool. Furthermore, we may be able to observe the impact of FDI and the results of such investment on the individual level.

Practically speaking, the data is provided by the same source as the world development indicators dataset previously used. This will allow us to reasonably combine the datasets as the notation and country specifications are consistent across these three datasets. Our team has recently met to discuss the overaching goals of the analysis to come and these datasets are a strong step in the right direction for the team.
